Mentorship can profoundly impact both mentors and mentees, fostering personal growth, strengthening social skills, and building a sense of belonging. At Green Chimneys, learning happens both inside and outside the classroom, and mentorship reinforces skills students develop through other therapeutic programming. Younger students gain encouragement from relatable role models, while mentors hone leadership, empathy, and patience—preparing them for life beyond school.
For 16-year-old Charlotte, being a mentor to 11-year-old Ethan is a meaningful experience that not only helps him but has transformed how she sees herself. Mentorship offers students like Charlotte another way to connect with peers, forming bonds that benefit both. Younger students gain support and confidence from someone who understands their struggles firsthand. In turn, mentors gain purpose and self-assurance. Additionally, mentorship builds community and connections outside of their classmates and direct support staff.
Charlotte explains how guiding Ethan has given her an opportunity to share what she’s learned from her own challenges, “It gives me a chance to get to know people and I think I can be really helpful with little kids. Especially since I know how it is for people here—they’ve struggled, like me. I use what I’ve learned to teach them what they should do instead of doing the wrong thing.”
The role of mentor has become more than just a responsibility for Charlotte; it’s a source of fulfillment. “I like helping other kids and making sure they’re okay. Being a mentor really makes me feel better about myself,” Charlotte shares. “I enjoy it, and it really is fun.”
For Charlotte, the experience has been transformative, giving her a sense of purpose while making a meaningful difference in Ethan’s life. Mentorship isn’t just about guiding others—it’s about finding joy and confidence in the journey together.
Mentorship is just one of the ways that Green Chimneys creates a culture of community. Learn more
Crowned the best for falconry in medieval times, gyrfalcons were once reserved for kings. As the largest falcon in the world, with exquisite plumage ranging from bright white to deep charcoal, gyrs are revered for their powerful skill of flight. Their long wings make hunting waterfowl from 3,000-feet-high a feasible and fantastical feat. This falcon was flown in the sport of falconry for several years.
