Visiting Your Child

Green Chimneys provides many opportunities for parents and guardians to visit with their child in the therapeutic residential program through individual arranged visits, special school occasions, and public events held for the surrounding community.

Family Time is a Key Part of Our Therapeutic Program

Youth and family contact means opportunity for improving family interactions and relationships, which are strong predictors of positive outcomes for youth in residential care so individual day and home visits are strongly encouraged.

Families with a child in the residential program can take advantage of a regular on-campus and home visit schedule coordinated with the child’s treatment team. The treatment team will develop a consistent weekly home visit schedule, unless there is a safety concern discussed within the team. Over the course of the year, six week-long recesses offer home visits for longer periods of time.

To accommodate families with varying schedules, Green Chimneys allows visits throughout the week, from after school up until 8pm. Weekend visiting hours are 8am to 8pm. We encourage visits to occur outside of school and clinical group hours, and prior to the start of night-time routines.

On-campus visits during after school hours or on weekends are permitted with 48 hours advance notice. After a child’s initial acclimation, a parent or guardian may also schedule off-grounds visits by informing your child’s social worker at least 48 hours in advance.

To reduce the burden on families who live further away, we offer transportation to and from campus via four pick-up/drop-off locations, including Suffolk County, Manhattan, Middletown, and New Paltz/Catskills. Procedure details and contact information are reviewed and shared regularly.

For more information, please contact your child’s social worker.
